        Die Zauberflöte

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart Libretto by Emanuel Schikaneder
Die Zauberflöte (The Magic Flute),
Mozart's operatic masterpiece, reveals some of opera's most beloved characters as they play out the timeless drama of good versus evil: the vengeful Queen of the Night, her conflicted daughter Pamina, the charming bird catcher Papageno, and the handsome prince Tamino. It is the enlightened Sarastro, though, who thwarts the Queen of the Night's attack and breaks her power forever.
This fairy tale work was written to provide popular, even slapstick entertainment for a rustic theater on the outskirts of Vienna, but its harmonic structure and beautiful music have made it a key monument of Western classical music. Ever since its 1791 premiere it continues to be one of the world's most frequently-performed operas.
