SONGFEST RECITALS
Melody Please! Anytime FGO performs 20th or 21st century music, most people assume that the music is “atonal” or “dissonant.” Yet, what does that really mean, and is that statement true? This SongFest will explore a wide selection of 20th and 21st century opera and give examples of harmonic structure and melody that exists in new music. You will be surprised that some of your favorite arias were written after 1900.
Meet the Composer: Michael Ching Michael Ching, the composer of Buoso’s Ghost, will join us for a look at his compositional style and the opportunity to hear some of his art songs and other music. Maestro Ching began his career at FGO (the Greater Miami Opera at that time). Come and hear about his experiences as a young pianist, and see how FGO impacted his future and the music he writes.
The Final Act Some of the most celebrated music in opera occurs during the final acts: “The Rigoletto Quartet,” “Colline’s Aria” in La bohème, “Nessun dorma” in Turandot or “E lucevan le stelle” from Tosca. Was it the composer’s intention to place that tune towards the end of the opera? Did it enhance the storytelling or was it designed purely to keep the audience’s attention? Join us for this installment of SongFest to hear some of your favorites.
