Silent NightBy KEVIN PUTS We are deeply honored to present our upcoming production of Silent Night this November, a time that holds profound significance as Veteran’s Month. This co-production with Atlanta Opera and Opera Carolina will be a truly spectacular event. As we speak, the sets are being meticulously built in Cardiff at the same facility where sets for the Met are crafted, ensuring a production of remarkable quality and authenticity. Directed by Tomer Zvulun, himself a veteran, this staging brings a deeply personal and heartfelt vision to life. Supported by the embassies of England, France, and Germany, and sung in three languages, Silent Night truly embodies the spirit of international reconciliation. We hope this extraordinary production—and the shared humanity it portrays—resonates deeply as a moving reminder of music’s enduring power. Silent Night is not just a powerful operatic retelling of the 1914 Christmas Truce; it is a tribute to the spirit of peace, humanity, and the resilience of those who have served. One of the most moving scenes in the opera occurs when soldiers from opposing sides not only sing together but also pray together and play soccer together on that extraordinary Christmas Eve. The German soldiers’ song “Stille Nacht” is joined by the sound of Scottish bagpipes, and the men share a rare moment of unity and humanity on the battlefield. This powerful story shows how both music and sports (here soccer!) can foster unexpected moments of peace and connection, even in the darkest times. We are also thrilled that Christian Carion is relaunching the film Joyeux Noël in September, the very movie that inspired this opera. We are honored to welcome the composer Kevin Puts and librettist Mark Campbell to join us for this special occasion. The cast is absolutely stellar, carefully chosen to bring this true story of hope to life. We are also privileged to have master fight choreographers Christian Sordelet and Rick Sordelet, ensuring every detail is authentic and moving. This production is more than just a performance—it is a tribute to the power of music, the unity found in sports like soccer, and a heartfelt homage to our veterans. It also marks a historic moment for Florida Grand Opera as we inaugurate our own orchestra for the first time in 18 years—this will be the first piece they perform. At the same time, Silent Night continues a new chapter for Florida Grand Opera with the official launch of our Voice of Wellness program, dedicated to supporting the wellbeing of veterans, first responders, and nurses. By aligning this powerful story of peace with a program designed to care for those who serve our communities today, we aim to extend the opera’s message beyond the stage and into real lives. Just as the soldiers once sang, prayed, and played together on the battlefield, Voice of Wellness seeks to create spaces of healing, unity, and renewal through the arts.
