Die FledermausBy JOHANN STRAUSS II What better way to begin 2026 than with a sparkling champagne celebration like Die Fledermaus! Johann Strauss’s beloved operetta is the perfect burst of joy and elegance to start the year. Its music is known and loved worldwide, even by those who may not realize it—featured in films, commercials, and celebrations. In Europe, Die Fledermaus is celebrated as one of the most famous and beloved operettas, a perennial New Year’s tradition in Vienna and beyond. In this effervescent operetta, you’ll find one of the most famous French can-cans ever written and a lighthearted, celebratory atmosphere. Our cast is truly world-class: Joyce El-Khoury, Nathan Gunn, Louis Otey, John Viscardi, Rebecca Nelsen, and Ginger Costa-Jackson—who recently starred in our Carmen—will grace the stage, with Ginger taking on the mysterious role of Count Orlowsky. We’ll also give this Viennese classic a special homemade flavor with a touch of Miami style and even a hint of Latino flair. It’s the perfect occasion for surprises and cameos, and we’re inviting patrons to step onto the stage and celebrate right alongside us. With spectacular Art Deco sets—originally designed for Glyndebourne, Geneva, and DC by Stephen Lawless and now brought to Miami—this production is visually breathtaking. The set itself is a spectacle, a masterpiece of design that evokes the glamour of the Art Deco era while creating a dazzling playground for ballet, symphony, and operetta. More than 150 performers will be on stage, making this not just a show but a grand-scale celebration of music, theater, and dance. All of this unfolds under the baton of Maestro Pablo Mielgo. Die Fledermaus is not only the second work this season to be performed by Florida Grand Opera’s newly inaugurated home orchestra, it is also a radiant demonstration that opera—and operetta—embrace all the art forms: music, dance, theater, design, and spectacle. Sung in German for authenticity, the dialogues will be performed in English, making the humor, charm, and sparkle directly accessible to every audience member. And the celebration doesn’t stop there. Our 2026 Gala will be held on January 24, immediately following the opening night performance. For this extraordinary occasion, the Adrienne Arsht Center stage will be transformed into a Viennese ballroom. Limited tickets will be available for this unprecedented event, where guests will step through the fourth wall and immerse themselves in the spirit of Europe, castles, and sheer joy. With the theme of the Viennese Ball, it will be an unseen experience that plunges everyone into Strauss’s world of champagne, waltzes, and delight. Sung in German with English and Spanish projected translations
